Happy New Year and may I wish all our members a prosperous 2012.
As we start the year it's time to remember that Retail is for all year round, not just for Christmas! The first quarter of each year is historically tough for retailers. The city scrutinise the trading pattern of Christmas and the post sales predicting fallouts where retailers have succumbed to difficulties. The market is only predictable in that it is unpredictable from macro and micro factors. We as an industry must continue to review any signs of change in consumer behaviour and their needs and what it means both for retail and the wider economy. With this in mind the SAS will build further partnerships and work with other organisations, retailers and landlords throughout 2012.
The end of 2011 saw Mary Portas' review of the High Street released with her 28 point plan for saving Britain's High Streets which have received a positive response and although cover some of the issues it does leave out other areas that affect our High Street's today such as fragmented ownership and the impact of food & convenience stores. Out of Town retailing will continue to be a threat but not to the detriment of the High Street as some retailers formats simply only suit this type of location. This debate will run and run. We all need to embrace this opportunity as High Streets are
important. They are the centres of our community and provide access to a whole host of facilities which may be out of reach for many people. We will cover this topic during the year in one of the societies seminars.
This year the society will continue with First Friday Drinks in London, which are always very well attended and a positive way to meet new people, share ideas and gain market knowledge. Please refer to the web-site for details of where these are to be held.
Other events throughout the year will include CPD Seminars and Social Evenings, APC Workshops, Golf Day, Football, Bowling, Quiz and others to be confirmed later this month.
The annual High Street Retail Conference will be held again with a quality Key Note speakers and various panel members. I will be sending you a separate note on this with a save the date.
Finally, please refer to the web-site www.shopagentssociety.com and e-newsletters which will keep you fully advised of what is happening throughout the year.
Kind regards
